“The temptations in your life are no different from what others experience. And God is faithful. He will not allow the temptation to be more than you can stand. When you are tempted, He will show you a way out so that you can endure.” (1 Corinthians 10:13, NLT)
The Bible says that the temptations I have experienced, are no different from temptations that others have experienced, or currently are struggling with. So it would make sense that some of the things that have helped others escape from temptation, may also help me to escape. And some of the things that have helped me, may also help others.
What do you do personally to fight the cravings of your addictions?
What helps you?
How do you escape from temptation?
We asked others who have “been there before” and these are some of the responses:
Just say, “Jesus!”
Surrender it and put it at the foot of The Cross.
Prayer. Pray, pray, pray, and pray some more! Pray for wisdom, strength, and courage.
Talk to someone. Be truthful.
Be around people who have your best interest at heart.
Reach out to a sponsor.
Attend a meeting.
Read or quote Scripture. Do what Jesus did when the tempter tried to tempt Him. He just quoted the Word. So first you have to learn the Word, then live it, and after you do that you won’t have time to relapse!
Think it through.
Turn on some Christian/praise & worship music, and drown your thoughts out singing!!
Find an activity to occupy your mind.
Get an adult coloring book…color to occupy some time. This can be calming.
Walk it off. Get active.
Drink a glass of water and move…walk, dance, ride a bike, whatever you enjoy and preferably outside.
Remind yourself of the consequences if you were to give in to the temptation.
Don’t leave a void. When you quit a bad/unhealthy habit, pick up a new good/healthy habit.
Chew some gum.
Distract yourself with something positive.
What do we need to add to the list? What has helped you? And what has not helped you?
