Sweep Away the Dirt

“I have swept away your sins like a cloud. I have scattered your offenses like the morning mist. Oh, return to Me, for I have paid the price to set you free.” (Isaiah 44:22, NLT)

One day I was sweeping the floor. My daughter, who was 3 years old at the time, was helping me with her little broom. I finished up and collected the dirt I had swept up in the dustpan. But as I started to sweep her dirt away, she protested and cried, “No!”

I stopped – a bit stunned – and asked her, “Why?” She told me she wanted to keep it and play with it.

Seriously!?! I mean, it is DIRT!

And then the Lord spoke to my heart,

“You have done that before to Me.”

“My children don’t want me to sweep away their dirt. Their past, their mistakes, sins, offenses, habits, hurts, strongholds —THEIR DIRT. I would happily sweep all their dirt away.”

Did you know that when we refuse to surrender [these things], we are compared to a restless sea with no peace that continually churns up mud and dirt (see Isaiah 57:20-21 & James 1:6). How true! When I dwell on all of the negative things in my life – whether past or present – I am not happy, and certainly not at peace.

Father God, please forgive me of all the times I have held onto things that I shouldn’t. Please forgive me for refusing to LET GO. Examine my heart. Show me anything that is in me that I need to release to You and I will lay it down and step back out of Your way. Sweep away my sins and scatter far from me my offenses. Help me to keep my mind on You, and the things that are true, honorable, right, pure, lovely and admirable. Guard my heart with Your perfect peace. I ask that you will give me beauty in place of the ashes. Let me be beautiful, clean and pure in Your sight. Lord God, there is none like You. How priceless is Your unfailing love. I trust You. Thank You for setting me free.

“You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in You, all whose thoughts are fixed on You!” (Isaiah 26:3, NLT)

  1. Beautiful story! Beautiful analogy! Our thoughts become our actions, then our character, then our destiny! We must think on positive things! Powerful message!

  2. Great story- I love how God can speak to us through little moments like that. It’s so true that it is easy to hold on to things instead of letting him come and sweep them away.

    1. Carly, yes, it seems like God has taught me a lot about my relationship with Him in those little moments with my daughter. I am thankful that He cares about me and continues to show and teach me things. And I am thankful for an opportunity to share some of those moments.

      Thank you for visiting!

  3. Love this. Sometimes we don’t want to sweep it away; we want to wallow in it a little longer; feel mad just a little longer.
