The Way to a Better Way

(Matthew 11:28-30, NLT) Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. [29] Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. [30] For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light.”

I will be honest with you. I had often heard of the yoke as being described/defined as that thing that tied the two oxen (or other working animals) together and attached them to a cart which held a load on it.

So it was just hard for me to picture a “yoke” as a good thing.

Because of this, I had trouble fully understanding what Jesus was saying here. I understood the concept that He would give us rest and that His burden was supposed to be lighter, but the magnitude of His Word was misunderstood for a long time for me.

But one day I was flipping through a magazine and saw a picture of a different kind of “yoke” that was placed on a man’s shoulders, and suddenly it all began to make sense.

A yoke is also defined as a frame fitted to a person’s shoulders to carry a load in two equal portions. It is a practical tool used to make carrying heavy loads easier and it helps to prevent muscle strain.

Wow! A whole new meaning and understanding.

Jesus has a better way. He offers a more practical way to live. He gives us tools that make our burdens lighter, or easier to bear. The way He shows us to carry our load will not cause us any harm or injury.

After this realization I began to look at that set of scripture in Matthew 11 in a whole new light. As I searched out the meanings of other words within Jesus’ explanation I could see what He was trying to let us me know.

This is what He spoke to me through the scripture:

Jesus is saying,

“Come to me, all of you who are fatigued, wearied and over burdened with anxieties. I have a way to make it so much easier for you.

Do what I tell you and you will not only feel rested, but refreshed.

Take this, my own practical tool. It is designed to take the stress off of you.

Let me help you understand. I am a gentle and humble teacher. You don’t have to feel like you are not good enough, or that you are not smart enough. I will not make you feel like that. Just listen to me and follow my instructions. Follow my Word. This way that I will teach you is useful. It is a better way. What I am asking of you is so much easier to bear.”

Angel, thank you for giving a clearer picture of the “yoke” that we carry and the burden He has lifted from us. I am blessed to have you share your encouraging words at #IntentionalTuesday

  2. You know, I really value this insight because it shows that God does call us to carry heavy things, but that he lightens them for us. There is power in this message. Thank you for bringing this up. I cheer you strongly from the #RaRalinkup on Purposeful Faith!

  3. I love this post my friend. Tears fill my eyes. I like how He tells us to come to him and to listen to what He has to say. I’m learning to just keep my mind quiet and listen. He is so much kinder to us then we are to ourselves. Great realizations Angel and powerful wisdom for us to live by.!!!
